Basira Raoufi
Nuristani Carver, Production and Design Studio, Turquoise Mountain, Afghanistan
Basira Raoufi was born in 1992 and grew up in Kabul. She finished secondary school after the fall of Taliban and later joined the Turquoise Mountain Institute for Afghan Art and Architecture where she began to learn carpentry, jali-making and Nuristani carving. Nuristani carving is a decorative woodwork tradition from a remote valley in North East Afghanistan. Woodwork is a very unusual choice of profession for a woman. After graduation Basira got a job with the Turquoise Mountain Production and Design Studio.

"I love designing and carving, and hope that Turquoise Mountain develops strong enough demand for these skills so that other young women can have the same opportunity as me."
